The Maple Custom shells use only the finest 7-ply (10-ply bass drum) North American Maple, combined with the patented YESS mounting system to create remarkable shell resonance. All Maple Custom drums have gold lugs with special nylon inserts to prevent tension rods becoming loose during play, all toms come with 2.3mm steel Dynahoops for precise tuning. The Vintage finish available on the Maple Custom goes through a four to six months aging process to give a rich, golden wood finish and an extremely dynamic full, wide open tone with a long decay.

The Yamaha 9000 Recording Custom is one of the most recorded drum kits of all time. First introduced over twenty years ago and still used by many of the worlds leading studio drummers. The Recording Custom is made from 100% 6-ply (7-ply bass drum) Japanese Birch. Birch shells produce a lower fundamental tone than maple making their crisp tone with short attack decay ideal for studio situations, but equally powerful for live work

The Maple Custom Absolute Nouveau series combines the best of the traditional drum maker's art with Yamaha's cutting edge technology. The low mass lugs and 100% maple shells accompany Yamaha's flawless wood finishes and state-of-the-art hardware. Not only do the drums look great, they sound fantastic. The combination of lightweight lugs and thin maple straight-sided shells (with no sound obstructing inner support hoops) gives the Maple Absolute Nouveau a bright, un-constricted, deep and powerful tone.

The Birch Custom Absolute Nouveau offers a modern interpretation of the birch sound made famous by the Recording Custom series. In production for over 25 years, the acclaimed RC has given Yamaha craftsmen a deep understanding of the characteristics of birch. It is with that knowledge that they have been able to extract a richer sound from the Birch Custom Absolute. It retains the birch character but is slightly livelier, more rounded and deeper.

The Beech Custom Absolute Nouveau is for the drummer who’s looking for something a little different, a subtle alternative to the more familiar maple and birch. If you fancy a change from the tightness of birch or the openness of maple then beech might be your salvation. Beech is as hard a wood as birch, but with its wider grain seems to emphasise the mid and low frequencies with a little more sustain. It’s a powerful, lively sound, though not quite so wide as maple.

The Oak Custom is a brand new concept in drum shells. Made from 100% Oak to produce a distinctive and harmonically rich sound unlike any other wood. The YESS mounting system and newly designed, single bolt, split lug casings assure free resonance and a truly open sound. The Oak Custom is available in four different colours, two in a Matte finish and two in a lacquer finish.

Tour Custom drum shells are 100% maple. The bass drums are 7-ply 7mm and have a warm, deep tone; the toms are 6-ply 6mm, with lots of warmth and resonance and have a wide tuning range. The bass drums have low-end punch but are responsive, the toms have lots of power, yet great sustain. The 14x6 matching wood snare drum has a very wide tuning range and great sensitivity so it is right at home on the road playing large venues or around town on a club date. Tour Custom drum sets are available in any of the three suggested configurations with 800 series double-braced hardware included.

Beautiful finishes on shells made of with an outer ply of either Oak or Birch, Philippine mahogany, and falkata deliver eye-popping looks. The deeper and thinner 8-ply shells feature 1.6mm triple-flange steel hoops and Air Seal System construction to achieve superior tone quality and durability. Yamaha has refined its Nouveau lug design, utilizing FRC (Fibre Reinforced Composite) on the bolt to which the lug is hooked. The lugs incorporate a unique floating design that eliminates contact between the lug casing and shell body to let the shell vibrate freely and reduce damping
