NAMM show 2008 part 1 Mapex and Paiste

MAPEX

The QR series kit has been an amazing success since it's introduction 2 years ago. After the launch of some new colours last year, this year they've decided to go with a limited edition silver sparkle with black hardware. The kit also features an extra cymbal stand. The kit will only be available in rock sizes consisting of a 22"x18" bass drum, 12"x09" rack tom, 13"x10" rack tom, 16"x16" floor tom and a 14"x5.5" snare drum.

The VX series has a new colour called transparent cherry instead of the current wax cherry which will be available shortly.

The M Birch has a new finish called Hermosa Fade which is a yellow sunburst finish, this colour should be available very soon and will become part of the standard colour options for the M Birch range.

The Pro M has a fantastic new limited edition Zebrawood option which looks awesome as the photo on the right suggests. Available for a limited period only in the 2 up 2 down configuration shown in the photo, that's 22"x18" bass drum, 10"x08 rack tom, 12"x09" rack tom, 14"x14" floor tom, 16"x16" floor tom and 14"x5.5" snare drum.

My personal favorite kit is the new limited edition Orion in Chocolate Burl Burst, this kit is limited to only 10 in the world and we've got one of them.

We should take delivery of it in the next few days. It's a 22" kick, 10" & 12" rack toms, 14" & 16" floor toms all for £1999.

There's some other great new colours available in both the Orion and the Saturn kits, plus Saturn is now also available with either chrome or black hardware.

Mapex also have a new snare drum in the black panther range. It's a massive 12mm 15ply shell in fame maple with die cast hoops.

PAISTE

Paiste have introduced a load of new models in the signature range. These include crystal thin crashes in 16", 18" and 20" and crystal thin 14" hats. An 8" cool bell and a full set of Reflector Heavy Full crashes in 16", 17", 18", 19", 20" & 22" plus 8" & 10" splashes.

The really great looking new cymbal in the signature range though has to be the Nicko McBrain 'Powerslave' ride. Nico will be using this cymbal on Iron Maidens 2008 world tour.

The Twenty range of cast cymbal has also been extensively expanded to now include extra sizes in the current range of crashes, splashes hi hats and rides as well as a new range of thin crashes as well as light rides and hi hats and thin china models.

The evening started with a great performance by local drummer Ed Richardson and his band Somethin' Kinda Blue.

Sebastiaan delivered an awesome performance, showing what a versatile player he his with either sticks or brushes in his hand.

Joined on stage with Sebastiaan was Sax player Steve Kaldestad all the way from Canada and the amazing bass player from Jamie Cullum's band Jeff Gascoyne. Jeff was struggling to see the music under the stage lights so a bit of improvisation was needed. Very Jazz!!!!!!

“To play the unplayed ” That is the self-proclaimed lifelong aspiration of drummer/producer Thomas Lang. Given his astonishing independence of limb and his stalwart dedication to improving his craft – Lang’s aspiration is more than well on the way to reality.

Thomas Lang has dedicated his life to the exploration of all things drum.
In addition to his relentless touring, recording and performing schedules, Lang’s instructional DVD “Creative Control” (Hudson Music) is now one of the biggest-ever selling instructional DVDs of all time and he has managed to find time to lend his expertise to Meinl Cymbals, the Remo Corporation and Sonor Drums to help develop new and exciting gear and drums accessories.

A native of Vienna, Austria, Lang took up drums at the tender age of five. Inspired by a televised performance of a heavy metal band, Lang assessed (quite rightly!) that he wanted to be a drummer when he grew up because, “the drummer looked like he was the boss – AND he got to sit down!”

In addition to years of private tuition, Lang was formally educated at the Vienna Conservatory of Music. As the youngest student enrolled at the legendary institution, early on Lang received a diverse education in a multitude of styles including Jazz, Classical, Fusion and Big Band? After leaving the conservatory, Lang began working professionally – slowly working his way through the European Pop, Rock and Jazz scenes. Working obsessively (sometimes with up to 15 projects simultaneously) Lang earned his stripes by working with some of Europe’s most demanding recording and touring outfits including Falco, John Wetton, Bonnie Tyler and many others.

In addition to his work with other artists, Lang’s 1995 solo release, “Mediator” topped the charts in Europe and garnered rave reviews for its innovative Jazz/Dance/ProgRock sound.

Despite his grueling touring and rehearsal schedule, Lang remains committed to a rigorous daily practice schedule. “I religiously follow a constantly-evolving practice routine. It’s not glamorous, but for me daily practice is a principle source of growth and inspiration in my playing,” says Lang.

Lang’s daily practice regime eventually became the basis for his 2-part series of instructional videos, “Ultimatives Schlagzeug I & II” which were originally released in 1995. Due to overwhelming demand, these videos were re-released on DVD in 2004 by Hudson Music (http://www.hudsonmusic.com/).

In his quest to, “play the unplayed,” Thomas has worked cooperatively with the research and development team at Meinl Cymbals to create, “Tom’s Becken” – a pitch-matched range of contemporary crash cymbals that provide acoustic and electronic drummers with modern sounds that resemble artificially engineered cymbal samples. Launched in 2002, “Tom’s Becken” were so well received that in 2004 Thomas Lang worked with Meinl once again to design the “Fast Hats” (www.meinlcymbals.com).

In 2002, Meinl approached the Remo Corporation to produce the “Thomas Lang Practice Kit” -
a totally silent, completely portable practice kit. “When I travel its hard for me to keep up with my practice because I worry about disturbing people in hotel rooms, or backstage. Then, it occurred to me that tons of drummers must give up playing because it’s too expensive or not feasible to keep up practicing. I took my idea for a totally portable kit to the guys and Remo – and the rest is history,” says Lang. (http://www.remo.com/)

Thomas Lang currently plays Sonor drums, Meinl cymbals, Vic Firth sticks, Remo drum heads, Roland electronics, Gibraltar hardware, Hardcase road cases and AKG microphones

His highly anticipated follow-up DVD, "Creative Coordination & Advanced Foot Technique" (Hudson Music) was released in November of 2006 and is available through his offical merchandise site, http://www.muso-mart.com/.

Thomas's solo album, "Along These Lines" is scheduled for release in early 2007 along with a music-inspired clothing line. Lang currently resides in Los Angeles with his wife and identical twin sons.

Despite his reputation as an innovative and prolific drummer, Lang has a surprising take on technique. “Technique has nothing to do with music. It’s like a tool, like a hammer. You can build a shed – or you can build the Sistine Chapel,” Lang told Modern Drummer magazine. “Some days I want a shed – some days I want the Sistine Chapel – or a villa or maybe a bowling alley!

Thomas Lang's official website is: http://www.sticktrix.com/
Thomas Lang's official myspace page is: www.myspace.com/thomaslangdrummer

Well in Derby anyway. For most of our Derby based customers, i appreciate it's been the worst kept secret for quite a while now, but on Wednesday 1st of June 2005 we will be opening our brand new shop at 137 London Road, Derby. The new shop is only about 2 minutes walk from our current location, just round the corner from the railway station.

An Evening With Jimmy Chamberlin

It gives me great pleasure to announce that Jimmy Chamberlin will be holding a Drum Clinic on Tuesday 2nd of August in Derby. The event will be held at The Spot Conference Centre and tickets will be priced at £5.

immy Chamberlin is probably best know for his time spent with The Smashing Pumpkins, one of the biggest alternative rock band of the 90's who, with albums like Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness went on to sell millions of records. After the demise of the band in 2000, Jimmy carried on his musical partnership with Billy Corgan in the short-lived outfit Zwan.

Although often perceived as "merely" a great rock drummer, there are so many other sides to Jimmy's playing. Taking lessons with future Yani drummer Charles Adams from the age of 9, Jimmy went on to study under many leading teachers, learning Latin, Brazilian, and Big Band Techniques. Following Zwan's break up, Jimmy joined forces with friend and fellow jazz enthusiast Billy Mohler to form the The Jimmy Chamberlin Complex. The result is an Album that partners jazz, fusion and rock explosiveness, Life Begins Again.

This is the first time Jimmy has been to the UK to perform any kind of Clinic or Masterclass, making this an incredibly exciting event.
