Sticks

Drum Sticks, quite possibly the most important piece of your equipment you'll ever need to buy and also the one with the most bewildering choice.

There are many factors to consider when choosing a drumstick including type of wood, weight, length, diameter, wood or nylon tip, plus the intangibles of balance and "feel". The kind of wood selected will have a great deal to do with the feel, the balance, the sound and the longevity of the stick. Here at Rattle & Drum we offer sticks manufactured using 3 different types of wood

  • Maple, the lightest of the three wood choices.
  • Hickory, the most popular material for drum sticks
  • Oak, the densest and most hard waring.

We also stock the Ahead sticks which feature a nylon outer sheath with steel shaft at the centre of the stick for maximum strength. The other main choice is the type of tip, some drummers prefer the natural sound of wood tips while others prefer nylon tips for a bright, cymbal sound and longer tip life.

In order to determine the size drumstick that best suits you, both in diameter and length, you need to consider the type of music you will be playing, Lighter sticks such as 7a, 5a & 5b are suitable for most types of styles but if you're a very heavy hitter you may require a thicker stick such as a 3a or 2b. Remember, you're looking for comfort and a stick you can control that also gives you the sound you want.

Please feel free to contact us if you would like more advice on choosing the perfect sticks.

Vater Hickory

Vater Hickory

Hickory is the most popular wood used for making drumsticks. Hickory is denser, heavier and more rigid than Maple. Hickory can also absorb a great amount of shock, which reduces hand and wrist fatigue. Dark, or "brown" hickory, is found closer to the tree's center and is slightly denser and heavier than "white" hickory.
